An Introduction to Automatic Enrolment

GThe government introduced new legislation in 2008 to encourage people to save for their retirement. The legislation, under the title of Workplace Pensions Reform and specifically known as Automatic Enrolment, came into effect for the largest companies in October last year.
Under Automatic Enrolment, employers will need to assess their workforce and automatically enrol eligible employees onto a qualifying pension scheme. The new employer duties will be introduced in stages over six years. Each employer will be allocated a date from when the changes will first apply to them, known as the ‘staging date’. We really like the SAGE guide which begins by outlining what Automatic Enrolment is and then goes onto provide useful guidance on the various staging dates, identification of different categories of worker and qualifying earning through to postponement and opt out procedure.
